This is the centerfold shot - the "Mama's Gone Surfin'" shot - taken by Jonathan Exley at dusk in Malibu. For "Santa Barbara" trivia buffs, A is staring at the bluffs where Cruz watched Eden disappear into the the secret grotto where she got her legs to work again.

This is the cover of "Fragrance & Thorn," which was also shot by Exley. Many photos were taken that day, most of them useless since A and Gary Grant (the producer) were in the middle of mixing the album and had forgotten to sleep for the better part of a week.

This photo (for the song "Ellen") was taken at The Bay of Refuge on the Kona Coast of Hawaii. A and his brother Michael spent several hours underwater there in the company of a giant sea turtle whose ancient shell was draped with "about six feet of moss hanging down."

This shot at the piano is reproduced on the disk itself. Much of the album was written at this keyboard, which has been in the family for years, but is slowly fading, since the sounding board has developed a crack. Meanwhile, A's daughter Devon is taking lessons on it.
